What We Do

The Living Legacy Center provides much needed educational and supportive services to help individuals and families locate and utilize the resources in our communities. We empower families by teaching them how to help themselves and in turn help others. We walk with families to ensure their needs are met and to teach them how to become self sufficient so they can in turn help others.

Build a Bridge, Build a Relationship, Build a Community.

About Us

Take A Tour

Let's start with what is most visible from the street. This is our Butterfly Garden. You notice the water feature in the center. The Heart represents our interest in the community with the garden sites radiating outward showing our involvement with the community. Our intention is to provide a habitat for hummingbirds, butterflies and birds accessible to the public. Each site contains host and nectar plants for butterfly, caterpillar, and larvae. At least one Butterfly bush is in every site; as well as multiple lantanas, and several esperanzas. Various flowering plants are added for the pure pleasure of their beauty. The garden was planned to provide food, shelter, and habitat. Most of our fluttering visitors are Monarchs, a few Sulfurs and an occasional Black and White.

Along the fence is the first section of our Community Garden. The produce will be offered as food, first to the clients of the Living Legacy Center and the volunteers, then for sale at our Farmers Market outlets to raise money to support the operation of our gardens. We have about fifty feet of Yard-long Beans here. We're hoping for as much as half a bushel per day from the bean vines. The Okra bed is next with the same purpose, hopes, and expectations. This entire thirty two foot bed should produce enough okra for both cooking and canning. Come by our Farmers Market and sample our Pickled Okra for a tasty surprise. The Cucumber Arch is our defining symbol that gives us a visual affirmation of our purpose for drivers to see from the road. Offering support, protection, comfort and hope, it is our pledge to build bridges in relationships, and our community. The cucumbers like it also.As we proceed through the archway, Individual Community Garden Sites come into view. Each 4’ x 8’ garden box is sponsored by individuals who can choose for themselves how much of what to plant when. Each sponsor is completely autonomous and pledges the excess produce to our Farmers Market. A special section of the Oasis Gardens at the Living Legacy Center is set aside for a Student Garden. There is a dire need in our community for assistance to young people with an interest in the environment. Some of these students are involved with FFA, 4F, even the Livestock Show. There is a shortage of space available for these students to raise and care for their animals. The volunteers in the Oasis Gardens are fortunate to witness the love, care and attention these young people lavish on their protégées. There are hopes the School Garden can be expanded and offered to additional students

Few people have time to relax and enjoy outdoor beauty. We are working to change that at the Oasis Gardens at the Living Legacy Center. This section of our nature project is our true vision. We are developing a Therapy Garden devoted to the enjoyment of young and old. Few people immersed in their busy schedules have time to relax and enjoy a few minutes of outdoor beauty. Here we can stop and breathe, enjoy the robins and cardinals, gasp at the darting blue-jay and melodies of the mocking bird, chuckle at the frenzied antics of the squirrels. Here we can visit with the elderly in a wheelchair as they smile broadly, running their fingers through leaves and soil, remembering childhood. We can display our gratitude to a veteran by sharing a hot dog and soda, laugh at grandchildren eating watermelon and spitting seeds. We have raised flower beds that provide accessibility for loved ones to partake in gardening. The covered patio offers protection from showers while the arbor provides shade. Planted in a raised bed, ginger shares the soil with peppers and another herb bed with a variety of plants waiting for drying and cooking. Beside the the Therapy Garden is our greenhouse protecting fruit, flower and vegetable seedlings.
